Current distribution of local and non-locals in Saudi Arabia

Based on the latest 2024 figures from the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT), Saudi Arabia’s total population is now 35.3 million. The Kingdom is home to 19.6 million Saudi nationals, making up just over half the population at 55.6%. The remaining 44.4% consists of 15.7 million non-Saudi residents.

This demographic mix shows that while Saudi families are the main drivers of local spending and market demand, the large expatriate community also plays a crucial role in the nation’s economy.

Differences between spending on locals and non-locals

Recent data from the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) shows that the average Saudi household spends approximately SAR 18,056 per month. In contrast, non-Saudi households have a significantly lower average monthly income of SAR 5,428, which is less than a third of what their Saudi counterparts earn.

This financial disparity greatly affects spending habits across the Kingdom. With significantly more purchasing power, Saudi families can invest in lifestyle enhancements, such as premium schools, or enjoy a broader range of entertainment and leisure activities.

On the other hand, most non-Saudi families must prioritize essential needs. A larger portion of their budget is allocated to basic expenses like rent and food, leaving little room for non-essential expenditures.

Distribution on spending categories

For non-Saudi families, the budget centers on the essentials. According to GASTAT’s 2023 survey, their most significant monthly expenses are food (SAR 1,474) and housing/utilities (SAR 1,154). Other costs, like transportation and personal care, take up smaller amounts, while spending on education, health, and recreation is minimal. It’s a clear picture of a budget focused on stability and meeting daily needs.

For Saudi households, it’s a different story. While they also spend the most on food and beverages (SAR 3,742), they have much more flexibility. Spending on transportation, restaurants, and clothing averages over SAR 1,000 a month, suggesting a lifestyle that includes greater mobility, dining out, and personal upgrades. There’s also more room in the budget for education and recreation, showing a growing investment in long-term wellbeing and quality of life.
